Ultrasound

Eastern Maine Medical Center's Imaging department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) in breast ultrasound, OB/GYN, general ultrasound and vascular services. EMMC is considered a Breast Center of Excellence with ACR accreditation in mammography, stereotactic biopsy, breast ultrasound, and breast biopsy. We have highly skilled and American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) registered medical sonographers. Our sonographers perform ultrasound examinations using specialized equipment to produce high-quality images of structures inside the human body. An ultrasound exam involves using an instrument called a transducer, which sends high frequency sound waves into the body and detects their echoes as they bounce off internal structures. Various body tissues reflect these sound waves differently. A computer translates this information to generate images of the structures on a computer monitor.

Diagnostic medical ultrasound is used to examine many parts of the body. These anatomical structures may include the abdomen, gall bladder, thyroid, breast, obstetrics (pregnancy), uterus, ovaries, scrotum, blood vessels, and many types of biopsies. Eastern Maine Medical Center has a specialty department in high-risk pregnancies, women's imaging, and in general sonography. We feature state-of-the-art equipment and the latest expertise, with accreditation in all three areas.

Ultrasounds can be performed at the EMMC Imaging Center located at the EMMC Healthcare Mall on Union Street in Bangor, or at our main campus on State Street in Bangor. Your provider will work with us to schedule your ultrasound. Please notify your physician if you have a preference in location. We will do our best to ensure your needs are met.
