    Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) is the Maine 2009 recipient of the Pro Patria award from the Maine Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) program. The Pro Patria award recognizes employers who demonstrate exceptional support for our national defense by adopting personnel policies that make it easier for employers to participate in the National Guard and Reserve. This award is given to one business or organization per state annually.

We are continuing our tradition by honoring or remembering a loved one.     Susan McLaughlin started taking photos when she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2005. “It was really relaxing for me to go down to the dock at sunset to think or try not to think. Taking photographs was just an extension of the thinking.” Most of her photos are taken around her home in Newport. Her favorite is the “Sunset on Sebasticook Lake” photo that is currently displayed across from the reception desk on the ground floor of EMMC’s CancerCare of Maine.

    Each year, EMMC’s CancerCare of Maine serves more than 2,000 patients primarily from Aroostook, Washington, Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo, and Somerset counties. EMMC’s program has received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer for its delivery of cancer care throughout the organization at the highest level. The award is presented every three years, and EMMC is one of only three cancer centers in New England to receive this award (in 2005 and 2008).

    Quality Counts, an organization committed to working together across organizations and across communities to improve healthcare systems and outcomes with the people of Maine, announced on Wednesday, March 11 that EMMC, along with Redington-Fairview General Hospital, St. Mary's Medical Center and Southern Maine Medical Center, have been selected by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to participate in a new effort to improve the quality of care in hospitals. The program will help nurses and other front line staff identify, test and implement changes that will improve the quality and safety of patient care in their medical and surgical units.
