(Bangor, Maine) – Organizers of EMMC’s Bone Marrow Drive are calling this year’s event a great success, with 261 adults added to the registry. Just over 200 people joined the registry at a similar event held last year.
Adults who are added to the registry provide hope for cancer patients who require a life-sustaining transplant. Only four out of ten people who need a transplant actually receive one, so increasing the pool of potential donors is the only way to improve the odds.
The Bone Marrow Drive was a part of the EMMC Champion the Cure Challenge, an annual event held at the Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer to raise money for local cancer research.
Bone Marrow Drive event volunteers from EMMC and EMHS recruited people to join the registry, helped participants fill out the paperwork and complete the cheek swab, and celebrated with potential donors each time someone was added to the registry.
