EMMC Celebrates Top Honor for Excellence in Healthcare Information Technology

12/17/2008

(Bangor, ME) – Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) is celebrating with its employees and the community today. In October, EMMC learned it was the only hospital in the United States awarded the 2008 Nicholas E. Davies Organizational Award of Excellence.

Sponsored by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), this prestigious award is given to select hospitals in the country for effectively using information technology to improve the safety and quality of patient care. In receiving this award, EMMC joins an elite group of top hospitals and health systems nationwide who met the stringent criteria laid out by HIMSS. Previous winners include such outstanding organizations as Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Ohio State University Health System.

“We are so proud to be recognized with this outstanding award,” says Deborah Carey Johnson, RN, EMMC president and CEO. “Much of the credit goes to our employees. Over several years of planning, development, and implementation, our nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals have embraced advancements in information technology. They are helping to bring the latest innovations in patient care to the people of northern, central, and eastern Maine. I congratulate them for this award and thank them for their dedication to these improvements for our patients.”

“Eastern Maine Medical Center has a proud tradition of providing quality healthcare services to the people of northern, eastern and central Maine,” says Governor John Baldacci, who was on hand to help EMMC celebrate. “I applaud EMMC for being the only hospital to receive the 2008 Nicholas E. Davies Award. The award singles out EMMC as a national leader in using available information technology to improve care for patients in Maine. This is another welcome sign that Maine is maintaining its leadership role in health care.”
Eric Hartz, MD, EMMC chief medical information officer, says this award represents tremendous advancements in patient safety for our entire community. “We have been striving toward a paperless medical record for more than fifteen years. Our Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) eliminates legibility issues, and also ensures that an order is complete – everything from making sure the dosage is correct to the number of times a patient should be take the medicine goes through the standardized system to ensure patient safety.”
The Davies Award was initiated in 1994, and the first awards were granted in 1995. The application process is rigorous, culminating with a two-day onsite survey by a team of adjudicators. The awards ceremony for this year’s award will take place in April, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois.

EMMC, a member of EMHS, brings the latest innovations and best practice standards in quality to our patients and our community. From groundbreaking clinical research to the latest robotic surgery techniques, we are committed to be the best and offer the best.
