EMMC Land Line Phone Service Restored

08/03/2010

(Bangor) - Eastern Maine Medical Center’s incoming phone service at the State Street campus has been restored following a digging accident on French Street in Bangor that disrupted phone service to the medical center and other area businesses and residences. Hard wired phone service to campuses at Union Street and Whiting Hill in Brewer are expected to be operational soon.

We will continue to monitor the designated cell phone access numbers that were in use during the phone outage to be sure all phone calls are received and managed appropriately.

After the mid-morning accident that severed a fiber optic cable in Bangor, EMMC was down to a single incoming hardwired phone line into the main number, which meant a busy signal for many who called the hospital.
During the outage:
  • Medical services at EMMC continued without interruption.
  • EMMC activated its Emergency Preparedness Response team, looked at the problem and converted communication to alternative methods to keep communication flowing.
  • EMMC reached out through the state’s Health Alert Network to referring hospitals, physician practices, emergency medical service providers and others, to let them know of the situation and to share with them cell phone numbers to use to access EMMC’s Transfer Center for patient transfers.
  • EMMC established limited access to our main phone line for people to use in emergency situations only.
  • Caregivers on the patient floors shared information with patients and families, encouraging them to use their personal cell phones, if possible, to remain connected.
