(Bangor, Maine) – According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, suffering a stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, but immediate treatment may minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death. Stroke patients in our region are in good hands at EMMC, as the hospital was recently recognized for excellence in stroke care for the third year in a row.
EMMC kicked off American Stroke Month by achieving the highest award in the industry, the Get With The Guidelines®—Stroke Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Award. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association grants this designation to organizations that effectively implement specific quality improvement measures, appropriately use medications to minimize the effects of stroke, and offer therapies aimed at reducing death and disability, and improving the lives of stroke patients.
“Helping patients identify the warning signs for stroke and quickly access treatment can help minimize damage and even death. Since May is Stroke Month, we are encouraging people to remember the acronym, ‘FAST’,” says Tarek Wazzan, MD, medical director, EMMC Stroke Care. “Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech Difficulty, and Time to call 911.”
“We know that every minute counts when it comes to stroke care. We focus on providing rapid care to patients, as soon as symptoms present themselves,” continues Dr. Wazzan. “In fact, EMMC also received the Association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment. This award, along with our certification as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, shows our commitment to providing the best care possible for stroke patients.”
