Eastern Maine Medical Center Receives Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer

04/06/2009

Each year, EMMC’s CancerCare of Maine serves more than 2,000 patients primarily from Aroostook, Washington, Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo, and Somerset counties. EMMC’s program has received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer for its delivery of cancer care throughout the organization at the highest level. The award is presented every three years, and EMMC is one of only three cancer centers in New England to receive this award (in 2005 and 2008).

The award recognizes the exceptional collaboration among physicians, assuring excellence in patient care. “It’s a testimonial to the exceptional care we provide our patients every day,” says Allen L’Italien, RN, CancerCare of Maine, patient care administrator. “We are committed to offering our patients the most innovative and state-of-the-art treatment close to home,” he adds.

The criteria for receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award are based on six areas of program activity, including cancer committee leadership; cancer data management; clinical services; research; community outreach; and quality improvement. EMMC’s cancer program outcomes consistently meet or exceed national standards.

Established in 2004, the Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the award following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility receives a full compliance rating on 29 standards; demonstrates Commendation level of compliance for seven of the standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program; and excels in compliance.

EMMC, as a member of EMHS, brings the latest innovations and best practice standards in quality to our patients and our community. From groundbreaking clinical research to the latest robotic surgery techniques, we are committed to be the best and offer the best.
