Got Drugs?

09/19/2014

(Bangor, Maine) - Unused, expired, or unwanted prescription medications can be very dangerous if they are diverted, misused, or abused. You can do your part to prevent prescription drug abuse by helping to spread the word about the next National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day scheduled for Saturday, September 27. Anyone who has prescription drugs can drop them off anonymously – no questions asked – at any local police station between 10 am and 2 pm.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the majority of prescription drugs that are abused come from family and friends, and are often taken from medicine cabinets. The DEA recommends getting rid of any unused medications you may have hanging around the home, and Take-Back Day is the best way to dispose of them.

Nationally, 390 tons (780,000 pounds) of prescription drugs were taken in during last April’s Take-Back Day. In total, 2,100 tons (4.1 million pounds) of pills have been collected since the first event was held in 2010.
