Plea to Drivers on State Street

12/04/2008

(Bangor, ME) – At Eastern Maine Medical Center the safety of patients and employees is our most basic value and priority. On December 3 at approximately 5:20 pm, an EMMC employee was struck by a vehicle while crossing State Street from EMMC to the Wing parking lot.

EMMC has focused on improving the safety of the State Street crossing for decades. Each year, we provide a shuttle bus between Wing parking lot and the medical center during the slippery winter months when it is dark as many employees leave work. EMMC consistently works with the Bangor Police Department and Maine Department of Transportation on improving the intersection and the safety of the crossing. Several years ago, EMMC purchased a special crosswalk signaling system to show employees how much time they have to cross the road before the light changes.

Although we can engineer the safest possible crossing, we cannot control human behavior. We are making a plea to all drivers on State Street to use care while driving and help us keep our employees safe. We are also reminding our employees to be extremely careful when crossing the street, and when entering and exiting the Wing parking lot in their vehicles, especially after dark.

Eastern Maine Medical Center, a member of EMHS, strives to provide excellent compassionate primary and specialty healthcare services and cooperates with others to promote the well being of the people of Maine. Our Mission is to care for patients, families, communities, and one another.
