EMMC Compliance Officer
Function
Janet Berkel is the compliance officer for Eastern Maine Medical Center. She also serves as the organization’s HIPAA privacy and information security officer. Compliance with all laws, regulations, and policies, as well as medical ethical imperatives is everyone’s responsibility at EMMC. Janet's job is to assure that EMMC has the educational and institutional framework in place so that employees, medical staff, volunteers and trustees can commit to doing "the right thing." She has been instrumental in helping EMMC develop open communication, education and training tools, policy development, auditing and monitoring to ensure our patients’ privacy and other rights are protected.
The Road to Here
Janet began her career at EMMC in 1978 as a project analyst and planner in the Planning Department. During her tenure at EMMC she has held many positions. She was a patient care administrator for more than ten years before transitioning to the role of compliance officer.
Janet holds both a Bachelor of Science in Resource Planning and Conservation and a MHSA from The University of Michigan. She is certified in both Healthcare Compliance (CHC) and Healthcare Research Compliance (CHRC).
What she’s trying to do
Through our compliance program, Janet has committed her knowledge and skills to enhancing EMMC's organizational transparency, assuring a culture that welcomes open, honest communication, and where making the right legal and ethical decisions is part of all activities.
