Experiencing severe health problems is frightening under the best of circumstances; imagine spending weeks in a hospital in a foreign country, unable to get home, with no friends and none of the comforts of home.

Returning from vacation and on their way home to Europe, a man and his wife landed in Bangor because he needed emergency medical attention. Hours at EMMC turned into days, and days turned into weeks as his treatment continued. EMMC’s mission is to care, not just for patients but also for families, and this is exactly what transporter Joe Beaulieu did. After assisting the patient for several weeks with transports around the medical center, Joe decided to offer comfort to the couple, far from home. What better comfort to offer than food?

Unable to leave the hospital, the couple was limited to the food at EMMC’s cafeteria. Even with the high quality choices available here, Joe understood they might enjoy a special treat. So, he asked the patient and his wife, if they could have any meal, what would they like? And they replied a steak dinner.

After checking with the patient’s nurse to make sure there were no dietary restrictions, Joe ordered a steak dinner from a local restaurant for the patient and his wife. He paid for it himself and delivered the generous meal, with a coworker, to the very appreciative couple. Joe’s compassion and thoughtfulness for a family far from home truly exceed expectations and exemplify putting the Patient First and Delivering Excellent Service.
