About the Campaign

Through Champion the Cure, Eastern Maine Medical Center strives not only to build a top-notch patient care facility, but also to expand cancer research in our region.  Advances in  the field of genetics help identify new cancer treatment options, which benefit our patients and our families.

Champion the Cure is EMMC’s capital campaign to relocate CancerCare of Maine to a new, state-of-the-art facility in Brewer, with direct access to Interstate-395. It’s an exciting response to one of EMMC’s highest priorities – meeting the demand for more space in which to deliver excellent cancer care. The building is anticipated to open in the late fall of 2009.

Designed to provide a healing and calming environment for patients, families and staff, the building will house medical oncology, radiation oncology, hematology and diagnostic services – including a blood laboratory, basic imaging and PET-CT scanning – on its first two floors. The third floor of the building will house the Maine Institute of Human Genetics and Health, providing cancer researchers with laboratory space for “translational research” – enabling advanced treatment options based on an individual’s unique cancer profile.

Thanks to the superb leadership of campaign Co-Chairs, Bill Horner, MD and his wife Cookie, and an extraordinary team of other leadership volunteers, Champion the Cure has received an outpouring of philanthropic support from people who have been working “behind the scenes” for nearly two years.

EMMC now moves forward to complete its campaign fundraising goals with an appeal for broad-based support from an expansive community of local and regional friends.

Champion the Cure. Be a Champion. Be Part of the Cure

Lili Acheson“Lila Acheson, age 9, of Indian Township, Maine, joined with her classmates last spring at the Indian Township School in raising nearly $1,500 in pennies. This was done to honor and memorialize Lila’s grandmother who was battling breast cancer but later succumbed to the disease. Her grandmother was also a teacher at the school. Their efforts have inspired many school children throughout eastern Maine to follow in the footsteps of Lila and her classmates. Please consider joining them – as it would be terrific for your school to be identified in the new cancer center as a Champion the Cure donor! To learn more, contact Healthcare Charities at 973-5185.”
