Function in the hospital: As vice president, chief administrative officer of the Medical Group, Michael serves as the administrative leader for EMMC’s integrated physician organization, which consists of 450 providers at 50 locations across multiple counties.
The road to here: Michael began his career in healthcare as a radiologic technologist. He graduated from St. Luke’s School of Radiology in 1982 and immediately began working for St. Luke’s Hospital, but had a desire to pursue a career in healthcare administration. A job offer and move to Omaha, Nebraska prompted him to get his bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration from Bellevue University. Later, he went to work for Per Se Technologies, managing outpatient imaging centers and multi-specialty physician groups. Eventually, Michael became regional vice president for Per Se Technologies. He later accepted an opportunity with HCA as the executive director of The Frist Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee. Michael then earned a master’s in business administration.
Michael has achieved several specialized certifications, including Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), Fellow with the American College of Medical Practice Executives (FACMPE), Certified Procedural Coder (CPC), and Certified Radiology Administrator (CRA). Michael is also Six Sigma Lean certified. He has written three articles for the Medical Group Management Association on customer service.
Before joining EMMC, Michael was the vice president of Physician Services with The Regional Medical Center located in Orangeburg, South Carolina. While in South Carolina, Michael was named governor-elect of the South Carolina Medical Group Management Association. He was also president of the St. Matthew’s Rotary Club and spearheaded several charity drives during his tenure.
What he’s trying to do: Michael wants to continue the development of an integrated physician medical group.
Guiding principle: Michael’s guiding principle is to strive for transparency, integrity, and honesty in every interaction. He learned the value of truth from his mother and has applied that philosophy to every aspect of his life.
Proudest accomplishment: Michael’s proudest accomplishment is being able to get his graduate degree while working full time and helping to raise his three children.
