Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

We know that having a critically ill or injured child can be very frightening. The Eastern Maine Medical Center pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is the only dedicated pediatric intensive care unit in Maine to provide the very best care to your child. Our compassionate and skilled staff delivers the highest level of critical care to pediatric patients, and offers reassurance to worried family. As a level II trauma center, EMMC serves central, northern and eastern Maine. We receive pediatric patients from this service area who need specialized and intensive care.

This six-bed unit offers 24-hour intensive care that is provided by three dedicated pediatric intensivists. Patients who come to the PICU need intensive nursing and may require specialized monitoring or support of vital functions such as heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. They may need medication that requires very close monitoring. All of these specialized, intensive therapies are available in our PICU.

Conditions that may bring a child to the PICU include:
  • Severe breathing problems from asthma
  • Serious infections
  • Certain heart defects
  • Some complications of diabetes
  • Serious automobile accidents or near-drowning incidents
Like our adult ICU, telemedicine consultations are available to distant hospitals. In addition, transport services are also available when the patient’s care needs exceed the current ability of the patient's local hospital.
