EMMC Exploring Plans to Align Pediatric Oncology Services with CancerCare of Maine at the Lafayette

EMMC is currently exploring plans to move our pediatric oncology services to CancerCare of Maine at the Lafayette Family Cancer Center in Brewer. This potential move is exciting because it will enhance and expand services for our young cancer patients. Currently pediatric patients who need chemotherapy and other infusion therapies come for treatment on Grant 8, our pediatric unit, at the State Street campus.

The inpatient nurses have been dedicated to ensuring these kids and their families receive the compassionate care they need, and we are very appreciative for their commitment to that work. Co-locating pediatric oncology and other infusion therapies with CancerCare of Maine allows us to take advantage of the resources and visibility currently offered in Brewer, including specialty pharmacists, specialized medication reconciliation, palliative care services and enhanced support from Oncology Clinical Research. In addition, we will have access to the space and resources needed to create a specially designed children's center for infusion services, the only one of its kind north of Portland.

We're all aware of the many challenges in healthcare today, and we believe we will best be able to preserve and enhance these services with this plan to reposition them in the organization. It's important to note that we aim to have most of the funding for the renovations and program enhancements come from community members who believe in the importance of these services for our region. We very appreciative of the support we’re already receiving from McDonalds, and Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities, who are beginning to raise money in support of EMMC’s pediatric oncology program.
