EMMC Seeks Volunteers to Greet Patients and Visitors, Fill Other Volunteer Positions

(Bangor, Maine) – Eastern Maine Medical Center relies on its wonderful volunteers to greet patients and visitors with a warm smile, bring comfort to those going through cancer treatment, assist with office projects, and help with many other tasks. Now, with a multi-year modernization project about to kick off, EMMC is recruiting additional volunteers to welcome patients and visitors, help people find their way around the hospital, and fill other positions.

For recently retired people and those who are planning to retire soon, volunteering at EMMC can be a rewarding way to build new friendships while making a meaningful difference in the lives of hospital patients and visitors. During the modernization project, volunteers will be on the “front lines” of patient care, greeting patients as they arrive at the hospital and helping with other projects as needs arise.

“For people who are looking to keep busy, volunteering is a great way to use their time and skills to help those in need,” says Martha Wildman, director of Volunteer Services. “Some people volunteer for the social aspect, others do it because they enjoy connecting with our patients. There are many reasons why our volunteers choose to contribute, and I believe that all of our volunteers find it to be a tremendously rewarding experience.”

In addition to knowing they are having a positive effect on the lives of patients and visitors, EMMC volunteers enjoy several other benefits, including discounts at the EMMC cafeteria and pharmacy, free use of the hospital’s fitness center, access to educational workshops, free flu shots, an invitation to join EMMC’s credit union, borrowing privileges at the Hadley Parrot Medical Library, and more.

“We would love to speak to anyone who has an interest in helping out,” adds Martha. “We can talk more about available volunteer positions and find a good match. We have several opportunities available right now, and we are sure to be able to match opportunities with volunteers’ interests.”
