EMMC to Focus on Stroke Awareness, Healthcare Associated Infections at Senior Expo

Bangor, Maine – EMMC will provide health screenings and education about stroke prevention and healthcare associated infections at the Eastern Area Agency on Aging’s eighth annual Senior Expo, scheduled for Tuesday, May 13 at the Cross Insurance Center.

“EMMC Primary Stroke Care will hand out a packet of information about stroke, which includes a risk scorecard and lots of helpful educational information,” says Angela Wheelden, RN, BSN, ONC, nurse coordinator, Primary Stroke Center and Total Joint Care. “Anyone who stops by our booth can get their blood pressure taken, and staff from Beacon Health, a subsidiary of EMHS, will provide cholesterol screenings. Registered nurses will be on hand to interpret the results and provide counseling. It’s a great way to raise awareness during National Stroke Awareness Month, which is recognized each May.”

At 2:30 pm, an EMMC infection preventionist will offer a free presentation about healthcare associated infections.

“Preventing healthcare associated infections takes a team approach involving healthcare providers and patients,” says Donna Dunton, RN, CIC, director of Infection Prevention and Control. “Our presentation will focus on how patients and healthcare providers can work together to reduce the prevalence of healthcare associated infections. There will be plenty of time for questions after the presentation.”

Seniors who attend the event can also talk to EMMC’s Total Joint Care team about hip and knee pain and sign up for EMMC’s next joint pain seminar, which will be held on Thursday, May 22.

“EMMC will have a little something for everybody at the Senior Expo,” adds Wheelden. “We encourage people to stop by and visit.”
