Special Health Insurance Marketplace Enrollment Period Announced

EMMC Offers Free Enrollment Assistance

(Bangor, Maine) – Some Mainers who are facing a penalty payment for not having health insurance are being given a final opportunity to secure coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace and avoid a large portion of the fine. EMMC enrollment specialists are gearing up to assist anyone who needs help signing up throughout the special enrollment period, which runs from March 15 to April 30.

“This enrollment period provides people who meet certain criteria with a last-chance opportunity to sign up for a health plan,” says Brenda Mulligan, CHAM, director of Access Management at EMMC. “For those who believe they may need to pay a fee when filing their taxes, it’s definitely worth a look.”

To be eligible, individuals must not currently be enrolled in a health plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace and have become aware of the penalty payment while preparing their 2014 taxes after the original open enrollment period ended on February 15.

“It will still be necessary to pay the penalty for the months in 2015 when the individual was uninsured” adds Brenda, “but this is still a great opportunity for people to get coverage and avoid steeper penalties.”

EMMC is offering free assistance to those who have questions about the special enrollment period or need help determining whether they qualify. Call 973-6065 or visit marketplace.emmc.org to connect with an EMMC enrollment specialist.
