Patients Notified of Missing Hard Drive

On December 22, 2017, Eastern Maine Medical Center became aware that a portable external computer hard drive installed and operated by a third-party vendor was missing. The vendor had connected the drive, which was last seen on December 19, 2017, to a cardiac imaging computer to store information pertaining to cardiac ablation procedures that occurred at Eastern Maine Medical Center. This incident involves patients who underwent cardiac ablation procedures performed at the medical center between January 3, 2011 and December 11, 2017, although not all patients receiving that procedure were affected.


What Information was Involved

The device included patients’:
  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Date of service
  • Medical record number
  • Provider name
  • A one word condition descriptor (like AFIB)
  • Procedural images of the heart

The device DID NOT include patients’:
  • Social Security Number
  • Addresses
  • Financial data such as credit card or bank information
  • Any information relating to any other healthcare services you may have received at Eastern Maine Medical Center
 

What We Are Doing

Since December 22, Eastern Maine Medical Center has conducted an extensive search for the drive and continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding its disappearance but, as of the date of this letter, the drive still has not been located. We plan to continue our internal investigation and partner with authorities as appropriate. We are reviewing our processes, and those of our vendors, to strengthen our security around this type of information.

On January 30, 2018, we mailed a letter to all affected patients to ensure all are well informed and can take precautions to protect their identity. Although the risk for identity theft associated with this event is low, we are offering free identity theft protection services through ID Experts®. Affected patients are eligible to register for one free year of MyIDCare™.
 

What You Can Do

If you had a cardiac ablation procedure performed at Eastern Maine Medical Center between January 3, 2011 and December 11, 2017, your information may have been on the missing drive.  We have attempted to notify affected patients by mail; however, if your address has changed it is possible you may not receive notification. If you have not received notification by February 3, 2018 and believe you may have been affected, please contact our hotline number at 1-855-973-8200 Monday through Friday from 8 am to 3 pm Eastern Time.
